African Innovations for Social Impact (AFRISI) Initiative
AFRISI is a collaborative program designed to bridge African technology and innovation gaps, promote African engineered solutions for local challenges, and effect measurable social impact through inclusive discussion platforms and festivals, skills development and impact investing.
Provide a dynamic platform to strengthen African innovation ecosystems and stimulate sustainable social impact in Africa.
In a little over a decade, Africa, with approximately 600 million mobile subscriptions, has become the world’s second most connected continent, next to Asia-Pacific. The region has also pioneered some of the most innovative solutions to improve citizens’ lives, including tools for financial services, health care, education, agriculture and key social services. Africa is home to over 170 Tech hubs, and churning out incredible young entrepreneurs who are increasingly competitive at the global level; creating jobs by providing solutions to critical socio-economic challenges.
The digital revolution in Africa has transformed lives, enhancing the way people do business, access and pay for services, and communicate in the region and beyond. As Africa transitions from the margins to the mainstream of the global economy, technology could play an even more significant role. Mckinsey estimates that internet contribution to the region’s GDP could increase from $18bn to $300bn by 2025, and e-commerce sales could reach some $75 bn/year. Further, the World Economic Forum (WEF) estimates some 150 million jobs could be created by 2020 in Africa alone through the use of ICT platforms. Ensuring inclusive participation in the global economy, as well as equitable access to digital dividends, would require improvement in adoption rates through provision of affordable, quality and usable internet; increased access to relevant content; improvement in digital skills and opportunities for scaled and sustained digital entrepreneurship.
The enterprising spirit of Africa’s youth reflects how Africans are becoming innovative in finding locally relevant solutions to daily challenges in the environment, health, agriculture and education, among other areas. How are the public and private sectors in Africa and global impact investing stakeholders tapping into this innovative spirit and empowering African entrepreneurs and innovators to drive sustainable social impact in Africa?
